A profoundly moving encounter as Bach’s music meets contemporary dance in a performance that reflects on our relationship with life’s final chapter.
Choreography, voice and the music of Bach converge in this remarkable production, which speaks for those standing face to face with death. The performance invites the audience into the singular realm that emerges when we recognise that life is drawing to a close. Can we come closer to understanding – even accepting – the inevitability of death? And might that encounter contain not only sorrow, but also humour and beauty?
“It is about death, and yet music, song and dance fuse into an exuberant celebration of life,” wrote the Danish newspaper Politiken, awarding LIGHT – Bach Dances five out of six hearts at its premiere in 2021. The production is based on conversations with individuals confronting the end of life and was created in collaboration between Lars-Ulrik Mortensen, Artistic Director of Concerto Copenhagen, the internationally acclaimed choreographer Hofesh Shechter and former Royal Danish Opera Director John Fulljames.
Together with Danish and international soloists, the baroque orchestra Concerto Copenhagen brings Bach’s evocative music to life – music that embraces eternity, beauty and a deeply felt longing for a world freed from suffering. A performance that gives shape to what can scarcely be expressed in words.
LIGHT – Bach Dances is performed in German with Danish and English surtitles.
In collaboration with Hofesh Shechter Dance Company.
