Enjoy a sparkling evening at The Opera House as Verdi and Shakespeare join forces to cut an overblown knight down to size – and celebrate the triumph of feminine wit.
Sir John Falstaff is an ageing gentleman with empty pockets but boundless faith in his own charm and irresistible appeal. In an attempt to restore his finances, he simultaneously sets out to seduce two wealthy married women of Windsor. Yet the ladies quickly compare notes – and the puffed-up knight soon receives a lesson he will not easily forget.
Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor is a delightfully inventive comedy, and in his final great masterpiece Verdi captures its sparkle, wit and warmth. His opera paints an affectionate yet mischievous musical portrait of the extravagantly self-deluded Falstaff and the perceptive women who refuse to be duped by his double-dealing.
Peter Langdal’s exuberant 2013 production revels in colour and comic invention, promising an evening of sheer enjoyment at the Opera House. Musically, too, the performance bursts into life, led by Danish baritone Johan Reuter in the title role, joined by Gisela Stille, Clara Cecilie Thomsen, Hanne Fischer and Kari Dahl Nielsen as the merry and resourceful wives of Windsor. Gihoon Kim, winner of BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2021, appears as Mr Ford.
Falstaff is performed in Italian with Danish and English surtitles.
