For decades, Chris Minh Doky has been one of the most prominent Danish names on the international jazz scene. With roots in the Nordic jazz tradition and many years spent in New York amongst some of the genre’s biggest names, he has developed a distinctive musical style that has made him one of the world’s most acclaimed bassists.
In 2027, he will embark on a new chapter with the album Midnight Songs, due for release in the spring. He is now taking the album’s star-studded band on an exclusive tour of the country’s major venues.

Chris is now regarded as one of Denmark’s greatest jazz stars and is among the few Danish musicians who have maintained a distinguished international career for more than 30 years. At the heart of his artistry lies an unmistakable sound and a persistent curiosity to explore the possibilities of the double bass.
Chris has evolved the instrument’s role from primarily being the foundation of the music to also serving as the melodic lead voice – right at the forefront. His rich, warm tone and strong melodic instinct are deeply rooted in the proud Danish bass tradition and the melodic clarity of Danish song, yet are also shaped by a long musical life in New York alongside the great legends of the genre. In his distinctive tone, this Nordic heritage meets the energy, freedom and soul of jazz.
As a teenager, Chris moved to New York, where Mike Stern spotted him early on and invited him to join his band. Shortly afterwards, Chris became a permanent member of the Michael Brecker Quartet, and went on to be chosen as bassist by the likes of David Sanborn, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Randy Brecker and Bill Evans. Working side by side with these legends, he developed the musical voice that would later form the foundation of his own international career as a solo artist.
In Denmark, Chris achieved his first major breakthrough with the Doky Brothers, formed together with his brother, the pianist Niels Lan Doky. Shortly afterwards, with the solo album MINH on Blue Note Records, Chris truly emerged as a solo artist in his own right. Here, his unique sound and the double bass as the melodic lead instrument truly took centre stage. The album was a major international success and marked his definitive breakthrough as a soloist – both internationally and in Denmark. At the same time, his popularity in Denmark grew further with the double-platinum album In a New York Minute, recorded with Sanne Salomonsen.
Since then, Chris’s personal musical universe as a solo artist has continued to expand through his own projects such as New Nordic Jazz and The Nomads, as well as Scenes From a Dream, orchestral works created in collaboration with Vince Mendoza. Whether he plays the acoustic double bass or his distinctive Yamaha Silent Bass, the bass is his personal, narrative voice.
Chris Minh Doky has received gold and platinum discs and has been nominated for a Grammy. In 2010, he was appointed a Knight of the Order of Dannebrog by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II for his contribution to Danish music and the arts at home and abroad.
The international press has highlighted Chris’s tone, sensitivity and artistic power. DownBeat described his sound as characterised by “softness and crisp clarity”, whilst JazzTimes highlighted his unique blend of softness and strength. The New York Times wrote that his bass playing could “seize the lead with a bear-like hug” whilst retaining its “rugged power”.
Chris Minh Doky’s music has its roots in Denmark, but has also been shaped by a long musical life in New York and by the years spent working side by side with some of music’s greatest legends.
