Evita

By Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice

Eva Perón was only 33. The musical about Argentina’s former First Lady is immortal. Now it takes flight on the Main Stage of the Opera House.

In the mid-1970s, the celebrated partnership of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice – also the creators of The Phantom of the Opera, Cats and Jesus Christ Superstar – set music and lyrics to the story of a woman who both divided opinion and attained near-mythic status in post-war Argentina. Over the five decades that followed, Evita travelled from the West End to Broadway and onwards to stages across the globe, collecting accolades, Tony Awards and millions of ticket sales along the way.

Now Evita returns with renewed energy to the Main Stage of the Copenhagen Opera House in a brand-new Danish translation. Eva Perón’s life reads like the very stuff of musical theatre. Rising from modest beginnings, she used her youth and charisma to ascend socially, gained political influence as First Lady, died at just 33 – and became an enduring icon for much of the Argentine people. She was a champion of the working class, yet also branded by critics as calculating and power-hungry.

Making full use of the Main Stage’s impressive scale, the Royal Danish Theatre and the Opera House bring together a large ensemble of outstanding musical performers, supported by the Royal Danish Orchestra. The title role of Evita – who sings “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” from the balcony of the presidential palace in one of musical theatre’s most iconic moments – is shared by Sara Viktoria Bjerregaard and Cecilie Stenspil. Sara Viktoria Bjerregaard appeared in 2025 as Satine in Moulin Rouge!, while Cecilie Stenspil is widely known from film and the Danish television series Badehotellet. At the helm stands director Niclas Bendixen, joined by set designer Benjamin la Cour, lighting designer Ulrik Gad, choreographer Signe Fabricius and costume designer Anja Vang Kragh, united in elevating Evita to new heights within the Opera House’s flourishing musical tradition.

Evita is performed in Danish, with Danish surtitles for the songs and English surtitles for both dialogue and songs.
