Steffen Bruun

Steffen Bruun studied with Lars Waage and John Guttman at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, and at the Opera Academy in Sydney with Professor Michael Halliwell.

In 2005, Steffen made his debut as the Emperor in Stravinsky’s The Nightingale at the Funen Opera. He has also performed roles such as Sarastro in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at Nyborg Summer Opera. Another much-loved role is Caronte/Plutone in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, which he has performed several times, including at the Court Theatre (Hofteatret). At the Copenhagen Opera Festival, Steffen was heard as Comte de Grieux in Massenet’s Manon alongside soprano Patricia Petibon.

Steffen is a frequently engaged oratorio soloist and can regularly be heard in the major oratorios by Bach, Schütz, Haydn, Handel, and Mozart, as well as in works as diverse as Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass, Berlioz’s L’Enfance du Christ, Beethoven’s Mass in C, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, Monteverdi’s Vespers of the Blessed Virgin, and Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri, with orchestras such as the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Concerto Copenhagen, Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Kiel Baroque Orchestra, Flensburger Bach Orchestra, Oxford Philomusica, and the symphony orchestras of Odense, Aalborg, and Southern Jutland.

Steffen has recorded the bass solo part in the world premiere of Klenau’s Symphony No. 9 as well as the Watchman in Nielsen’s Maskarade, both with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra.

Steffen is a member of the Danish National Vocal Ensemble and is also part of the Berlin-based Home Opera, where he is a valued singer and presenter.
