A powerful drama of sibling love, rootlessness and inherited trauma – and of the void left by a poet whose voice, written in unflinching capital letters, shook a nation: Yahya Hassan.
Yahya Hassan’s death in 2020 was as shocking as the impact his explosive debut poetry collection once had on Denmark. In its wake, his family was left in grief and disbelief. In Steffen Stubager’s compelling 2024 book Familien Hassan, Yahya’s mother and his four siblings – Kawther, Khadeeja, Abd Al-Salam and Abdullah – speak publicly for the first time about Yahya and their upbringing in the Trillegården housing estate in Aarhus.
Their testimony is a story of searching for footing in a pattern of rootlessness: refugee trauma, domestic violence, serious crime, institutional placements, gang environments, death threats, imprisonment, social neglect and fractured parallel societies. These are voices reporting from a closed world – a part of Danish society rarely heard from the stage.
“There’s something in the poetry collection you probably won’t like,” Yahya said.
“Yeah, right,” I thought. “Who the hell wants to listen to a ‘paki’?”
Khadeeja, Yahya’s sister
Now the story of the family from the Trillegården estate comes to life on stage, as award-winning Iraqi-Danish director Sargun Oshana brings to the theatre this account of a silenced reality in contemporary Denmark – the public housing environment from which Yahya Hassan’s pain and poetry emerged.
The four siblings are portrayed by Ellaha Lack, Zere Celik, Arian Kashef and Wahid Sui. Kurdish singer and musician Rezwan Taha composes the music and songs and performs live on stage.
