The Glass Menagerie

By Tennessee Williams

Sidse Babett Knudsen and Morten Hee Andersen clash in a claustrophobic drama of self-deception and irreconcilable family ties.

The Glass Menagerie was Tennessee Williams’s breakthrough play in 1944 and bears the unmistakable imprint of autobiography. The story unfolds through the memory of the son, Tom, and through his gaze the family’s fate is revealed over the course of a few intense and decisive days.

Tom’s mother, Amanda, lives vicariously through her children, trapped in the perpetual conflict between setting them free and shaping their destinies. Her daughter Laura is her opposite: fragile, withdrawn and devoted to her delicate collection of glass figurines. Beneath her quiet exterior lies an inner life her family cannot reach. Amanda is determined to secure Laura’s future – whether through work or marriage – yet Tom’s pity for his sister only deepens her dependence and keeps her suspended in vulnerability.

When Tom invites his colleague Jim to dinner, and Amanda seizes upon him as a potential suitor for Laura, the family’s carefully sustained illusions begin to fracture – and the fragile glass world threatens to shatter.

Resident director Anna Balslev and set designer Laura Løwe – the creative duo behind several striking interpretations of the classics – delve into this chamber piece of domestic horror and ask: can you ever truly break free from where you come from? And are we bound as much by resentment as by reconciliation and submission?
