Experience Lars Mikkelsen, Kirsten Olesen and Joen Bille in a darkly comic masterpiece about the absurdity of existence.
In this absurd tragicomedy, four desperate figures are locked in a senseless, painful game. Move after move, they torment one another in what feels like an endless stalemate, all the while searching – futilely – for meaning in life and in death.
Lars Mikkelsen plays Hamm, the master of the house, gripped by mounting terror of death. Blind and paralysed, he is confined to his chair. His servant Clov is condemned to endure Hamm’s unreasonable demands. Hamm cannot stand; Clov cannot sit. In two dustbins reside Hamm’s indescribably aged parents, portrayed by Kirsten Olesen and Joen Bille, recounting sentimental anecdotes in an almost unbearable loop of repetition. Together, they are trapped in a claustrophobic room with windows set so high that Clov must climb a ladder whenever he is ordered to report on the outside world. What he sees is only emptiness – a landscape desolate and abandoned.
