Danger, Daddy, War-man

A Fairytale by Christian Lollike

“In times of war, you have to dig your heels in. The Russians know that.” In a sharp and darkly comic new play, Christian Lollike takes the pulse of Denmark’s will to defend itself.

Once upon a time, there was a small kingdom in the far North – a place long sheltered in peace and comfort. But the calm is beginning to crack. A threat looms, and unease ripples through the Prime Minister’s Office: the army has no soldiers. “What are we to do?” the Prime Minister asks. “How do you convince people to don the uniform after so many years drifting in safe, sheltered waters?”

In this strikingly timely play about rearmament and national security, award-winning playwright Christian Lollike casts a sharp and satirical eye on Denmark’s readiness to defend itself. The world has grown increasingly unstable – even in Lollike’s not-so-fictitious fairytale realm – and Denmark must urgently rebuild its defences, train soldiers and invest billions in military hardware. Yet weapons alone are not enough – only by strengthening our shared spirit can we meet the enemy with our heads held high, in body as well as in mind.

But when turmoil knocks at the door, how willing are the Danes to march in step? Who do we become when war draws near? And what, in the end, are we prepared to lay on the line?

With his razor-edged social satire, Lollike has received the Reumert Award for Best Performance for two consecutive years for The Scool Comedy (2024) and Jeppe of the Hill (2025) at Aarhus Theatre.
