CPH STAGE opens this year’s theatre festival with the spellbinding and musical dance performance “MÁM” by the Irish company Teaċ Daṁsa.
At the foot of Ireland’s mountain, Cnoc Bhréanainn, at the western tip of the Dingle Peninsula, there stands a community hall. From here, “MÁM” takes us on a journey from the otherworld, deeply rooted in Ireland’s extraordinary landscapes and captivating culture.
In a whirlwind of mysticism and magic, twelve international dancers take the stage alongside seven musicians from the Berlin-based stargaze collective, as well as the virtuoso concertina player Cormac Begley. With intensity and humor, the dancers’ movements are woven into both classical music and local folk traditions to explore the meeting of national narratives and established systems.
The word MÁM has several meanings — from an “obligation” to “a handful of goodies.” “Mountain pass,” however, encapsulates the performance in the finest way, and the word stems from the local West Kerry language Corca Dhuibhne in Ireland, where the performance was created.
The dance company Teaċ Daṁsa was founded by Michael Keegan-Dolan in 2016 with an aim to create deeper connections to Ireland’s traditions, language, and music. The name Teaċ Daṁsa (House of Dance) captures Michael’s journey in creating dance- and theatre-works that clearly reflect the places they come from.
The performance is curated by CPH STAGE and presented in collaboration with The Royal Danish Theatre.
