Art and conversation converge as Artistic Director Amy Watson invites audiences to experience dance and debate in an entirely new format in Skuespilhuset.
We must speak – and we must listen. Our times are defined by challenges that call for attention, openness and a willingness to hear not only those who agree with us, but also those who do not. Dialogue is the Royal Danish Ballet’s forum in which dance serves as a catalyst for conversation about the pressing, complex and often divisive questions of our age. The evening begins with a performance that invites reflection and continues with an open discussion, where audiences and invited guests alike are encouraged to respond to and engage with what they have experienced. The first edition of Dialogue brings together three distinct ballets, each addressing a different theme.
Emma Portner, currently an influential voice in contemporary dance and an outspoken advocate in discussions about women’s roles within the art form, presents islands, a duet for two women. Here she deconstructs ballet’s traditional gender conventions, long shaped by male choreographers who defined the female figure on stage. In Portner’s own words, she seeks to “take ballet history and, respectfully, strike it with a hammer.”
The stage then belongs to choreographer Eukene Sagues, who presents her new work Homo Sapiens Sapiens. Having drawn acclaim in 2024 for her powerful interpretation of Lorca’s Bodas de sangre, she now turns to questions of human evolution: Where do we come from? What are our bodies capable of? And how has the human mind developed?
The dance programme concludes with Stephanie Thomasen of Uppercut Danseteater. In her new work Cattle, she examines the impact of the cattle industry on animal life and reflects on our ambivalent relationship with the animals we consume.
Following the performances, the floor is opened for discussion – conducted with respect for both the artists on stage and the diverse perspectives expressed in the debate.
